Moving to Florida was a leap of faith, but by applying the lessons from my past, I faced this challenge head-on with resilience, hard work, and the willingness to start over—proving that I can overcome any obstacle.
Moving to Clearwater in 2018 was supposed to be a dream come true. I told my partner, Robb, “If we don’t move now, we never will!” My son Brandon was away serving in the Marines, and I knew once he returned, I wouldn’t want to leave Indiana. Robin supported the move wholeheartedly. Both being in real estate, he knew as well as I did that, we would have to reestablish our careers in a new market. However, with 15 years of experience in real estate at the time, I had built a successful career from the ground up before; how hard could it be to do it again?
But the reality of starting over in Florida was far from easy. Despite my extensive experience, I quickly learned that the Florida real estate market was tough to break into. It was saturated, competitive, and flooded with agents, many of whom had established strong networks and local reputations. To make matters worse, COVID was rampant, and lockdown was in full effect. My years of experience through this trying time, I realized more than ever that I had the task of truly rebuilding my career from scratch. But I was up for the challenge.
This wasn’t the first time I had faced such challenges, though. My experience moving to Indianapolis years before had prepared me for the difficulties of starting over. Back then, I was a single mother with my three-year-old son relying on me. The move was driven by a job transfer, and it meant leaving behind everything familiar—family, friends, and a support system in Ohio. It was just the two of us in a new city, and I knew no one.
My life revolved around work and taking care of Brandon. The company that transferred me kept expanding my territory, demanding more of my time, which meant Brandon spent long hours in daycare. Those were some of the hardest years of my life as I was pulled in all directions. But it also taught me resilience and fierce determination. I realized this lifestyle wasn’t sustainable in the long run—I needed a career that would allow me more flexibility to be there for my son. That’s when I decided to pivot into real estate in 2003. Over the next 15 years, I built an amazing business and made a trusted name for myself. It was a lot of hard work, but it paid off tenfold, allowing me to be there for my son and do something I love.
The skills and strength I developed during those early years in Indianapolis were exactly what I leaned on when I moved to Florida. Initially, I joined a real estate team, but quickly found, just like in Indianapolis, I had to carve out my own path and make things happen on my terms in order to be successful. I joined Century 21 Coast to Coast, a smaller, more supportive firm.
Starting from the ground up, I focused on networking, making connections, and building genuine relationships. I went down to the beach often, handing out business cards and talking to people. Through sheer determination, I began to build a client base, establishing a reputation for myself here in Clearwater as a strong negotiator providing top-notch service. Since 2018, I have earned countless positive reviews, was recognized as REALTOR® of the Year in 2020, and, most importantly, have many repeat clients who know and trust in me to get results!
Moving to Florida was certainly not as easy as I thought, but I’m grateful for the life I have built here. My journey has shown me that I am strong and capable of taking on any challenge! My son, Brandon, has even moved here after serving in the Marines and now works in the mortgage industry. Robb and I have fully embraced the Florida lifestyle, spending time at the beach, playing pickleball, and going on motorcycle rides!
